This is not a portfolio. This is not an image gallery. This may be a journal, a personal one—a compilation of artistic traces, personal experiences, actions, and gestural archival methods. This is definitely not documentation, at least not 'that' kind. This is not a snapshot either, rather a compilation and collage of visual-'frozen' artistic traces and experiences.

Thus, documentation here means something 'else': unfreezing those traces and moments by introducing an event within another (the present time of the event and its process chain as documentation-means in itself)—wanting to engage in active conversation with the participants, artist(s), passersby, neighbors, and city-dwellers.

Rodrigo Ghattas is a Peruvian-Palestinian visual artist and cultural producer born in 1989 in Lima, Peru, now live and work in Oslo. Initially trained as a sculptor, Ghattas holds a BFA in Sculpture from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (Peru) and an MFA Art and Public Space from Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo (Norway). He is also the Founder and Artistic Director of Machaqmara Center for the Arts (MQA), which he's been running since 2014. In addition, Ghatas has worked as an OSLO PILOT Artistic Collaborator in 2016-2017 and held a Curatorial Assistant position in 2018 for the Oslo Biennalen first edition. He currently holds the position of Coordinator at UKS (Unge Kunstneres Samfund / Young Artists' Society). Ghattas' work has been displayed and 'performed' in Thailand, Peru, the USA, Norway, China, Italy, and the UK. He is a member of NBK (Norwegian Association of Visual Artists), UKS (Young Artists' Society), and PAO (Performance Art Oslo).

His artistry drifts between a range of different artistic means; event-based forms, actions, performative interventions, sculpture, and creative writing, with a special focus on forms of 'daily performativity'exploring performative aspects and the micropolitics of daily life. Initiating temporary situations that question 'automatic' sociocultural choreographies. Highlighting ordinary experiences and analog-encountering the curious accidents, contradictions, and paradoxes of urban and popular culture with a playful and intimate approach.

Since 2019, his art projects have taken the form of imaginary institutions -e.g. The Institute of the Unexpected- aiming to address a specific issue of public life or a research theme. Introducing 'experiment'-events unable to foresee in public space, often through a series of poetic acts -small gestures-, by the artist and others. These actions navigate between precise instructions / guided participation and spaces of improvisation / self-directedness, inviting spectators and local residents to participate and experience choreopoetic explorations (convivial spaces to empower countercultures). Whilst challenging established concepts of 'normality' and encouraging the displacement of social conventions.

Ghattas's work is the result of a close-distance and collective production of temporary yet intimate encounters with strangers (passersby) in the public realm. His projects can often only be grasped by the traces they leave behind. Open-ended processes that explore new intimacies, mediated forms of domesticity and foreignness, and modes of creative self-directedness in the city. A sort of repetitive drifting that seeks to explore different forms of wander and gestural interaction in the city. Examining issues of cultural identity, 'social impermanence', modern habits, and urban rituals.

“Time is a two-way street in which I find myself in the open.” – Rodrigo Ghattas

Tracing Yellow Series

“Tracing yellow” is a series of three experimental, small-scale and participatory art projects developed in the city of Oslo. The projects attempt to chase and explore the color «yellow» as a symbolic sphere of togetherness from a perspective of cultural-specificity. I am especially interested in how we use our bodies to interact with strangers across cultures. I am seeking new strategies to challenge the automatic choreography of our everyday life. With social baits —small gestures— I introduce unexpected situations and temporary experiments in public spaces which revolve around issues of cultural identity, urban myths, city rituals and social behaviors.
